Despite their humble begins, in just 16 years, Barbara Baekgaard and Patricia Miller have expanded their line of women's Vera Bradley luggage, accessories and clothing from small sales in their house to major niches across the globe. The story begins when the two discovered that they both had an interest in fashion. Soon, they noticed that women on business had a need for attractive functional luggage for business trips. With $500 and their mother's name, they developed some fabric for soft, quilted duffel bags and purses.
The items became a hit of an in-home clothing show, and demand escalated. Barbara and Patricia discovered themselves looking for experienced seamstresses, deals on wholesale fabric.
Those key business habits would make Vera Bradley Designs well as the company began to take off. In just 3 years, the firm topped $1 million in sales and has grown every single year. In 1987, Barbara and Patricia received one of Ernst & Young's coveted "Entrepreneur of the Year" Awards.
